Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809 - 92) was born in Lincolnshire and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge.
The death of his close friend Arthur Hallam moved him to write In Memoriam in 1850.
In the same year he was appointed poet Laureate, and he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Tennyson in 1884.
He is buried in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey.
