On New Year's Eve, 1900, Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) returns to his hometown of Odense. He wanders its streets, visits his childhood home - now a museum and then leaves, vanishing into the depths of the sea. Running parallel to this journey is the tale of Ole Lukøje, the Wizard and Mas- ter of Dreams, often consid- ered Andersen's alter ego. Ole visits a young boy named Jalmar, spinning fairy tales to accompany his slumber.
